Over the past five years, emergency services funding in Australia has been driven by population growth, which has led to an increase in demand for emergency services. International terrorism attacks, rising cyber crimes, and perceptions of weakening safety of the community have also supported demand for police services. One-off events such as the catastrophic flooding in the eastern states in 2010-11, and the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria, have led to a spikes in emergency services expenditure.

As per reports, it has been revealed that the NSW Nurses Association has announced that due to staff shortage, they will not be able to have night services at the Bonalbo Hospital. It is said that the announcement will leave local people without 24-hour emergency health services.
The hospital will not be open from Monday between 11 pm and 7 am, said the association. They said that local people and people living at nearby places will face a lot of problems. It is said that if people will need to go to a doctor in night then they will have to travel 70 km and have to go to Casino.
The NSW Nurses Association General Secretary, Brett Holmes, said that the decision seems to be taken quite abruptly and without any consideration that it will affect thousands of people living in the community.
“The people usually only call on health services during the night when things are serious, so it is important that this community has sufficient capacity to respond during the night”, he further affirmed.
In addition, it has also been found that budget cuts will have serious impact on the hospital, as they are left with just one ambulance for night service. It has also been found that a lot changes were introduced at the time when Dr. Trevor Tierney, who is the town’s GP, took the retirement.
Majority of people thought that emergency services might have closed after the retirement of Tierney. But, it was found that nothing of such sort has happened. Health advocates said that it does not seem that people would be much affected with the decision, as majority of people were not using the emergency services. They used to travel to the Casino, Lismore, or Urbenville hospitals.
Kelvin Connect, an Airwave Group company, used the British APCO 2012 exhibition to showcase Pronto, the world’s first fully-functional electronic police notebook and information management solution.
According to Nigel Rees, Managing Director of Kelvin Connect, “Pronto is a comprehensive, flexible, mobile information solution that streamlines and transforms core police business processes, putting the front line first.”
Documented case studies have proven the business case for Pronto, with Lothian & Borders who have been using the product for over four years and have reported combined cashable savings of over £600,000 per annum. In late 2011 Kelvin Connect secured the contract for an additional 500 users from Surrey Police to use Pronto, which brings to total to 850 devices.
“The roll out of Pronto across Surrey will build on the initial deployment and support the goal of delivering benefits to the force both in terms of enhancing support to front line officers, as well as realising significant cashable and non-cashable savings in the back and middle office through the streamlining of processes,” says Nigel.
Pronto is also being used as part of the NPIA’s Electronic Witness & Signature Pilot Project in partnership with the Crown Prosecution Service and the first case was won in late 2011 by the Crown Prosecutor at Redhill Magistrates Court in Surrey.
ŠKODA has won a competitive tender to provide Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) with its fleet of flexi-duty officer vehicles.
Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service has purchased 22 ŠKODA Octavias and a ŠKODA Superb for its latest fleet of flexi-duty officer vehicles. The cars will be put through their paces as incident support vehicles, reacting to major incidents at a moment’s notice. With flexi-duty officers required at all large-scale fires, road traffic collisions and specialist rescue incidents the fleet provides essential support in helping to protect the community and save lives.
Ian Grimes, Transport Manager, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, said, “Our entire flexi-duty fleet is provided by ŠKODA and this latest delivery will bring us to a total of almost 100 vehicles. We have complete confidence in every ŠKODA on our fleet as they’re extremely well built and highly reliable – enabling us to respond to incidents quickly and safely.
“Our officers transport a variety of equipment to a wide range of incidents, from life jackets to hazardous material testing kits, so the Octavia’s impressive boot capacity was an important factor in selecting ŠKODA. In addition, our maintenance costs have dropped and we’ve had extremely positive feedback from staff – we really couldn’t ask for more than 100% confidence in the fleet’s performance.”
The response vehicles will be specially fitted with a covert grill light, blue LED lights on both wing mirrors, a blue magnetic roof light and emergency sirens.
Martin Burke, Head of Fleet Sales at ŠKODA UK, said, “Our cars perform extremely well as emergency service vehicles – they’re safe, spacious and have great build quality. We’re delighted that staff at Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue have chosen once more to invest in ŠKODA and I’ve no doubt that their latest delivery will continue to exceed expectations.”
MURRIETA – To quicken response times, ambulance provider American Medical Response announced today it will station an additional crew in Murrieta, amid calls by some city officials to boot AMR because of costs and late arrivals.
According to AMR, an extra ambulance will be available 24 hours a day to serve the western half of the city by the end of the month.
AMR officials also extended an offer to electronically link AMR’s dispatch center with the Murrieta Fire Department to enable simultaneous communication and get ambulances rolling to locations faster.
“We understand the financial challenges that the Murrieta Fire Department is facing, and we are prepared to assist the residents of Murrieta to ensure they continue to receive the highest level of care,” AMR-Riverside General Manager Tom McEntee said.
He noted public resistance to a proposal by the city to have residents pay a “first responder tax” to cover the cost of fire department operations, highlighting the fact that all of AMR’s charges are direct fee-for-service.
For the past three decades, Riverside County has contracted with AMR for medical calls, and under the agreement, AMR serves most cities within the county.
The estimated $95 million contract was last renewed in 2009, but the compact expires June 30, and the Board of Supervisors is expected to decide whether to extend it between now and then.
Several Murrieta officials have publicly criticized AMR for slow Advertisement [ Berry-Bell and Hall Mortuary ] response times, calling on the county to put the Denver, Colo.-based company’s contract out for bid.
Cal Fire Firefighters Local 2881 Director Ray Martinez made the same request in a letter to the board last month, saying a “transparent, competitive bidding process has provided efficient and cost-effective ambulance service in our neighboring counties and has served as a catalyst for modernization and improved services.”
Murrieta City Councilman Randon Lane has blasted AMR for charging residents for ambulance transportation when city firefighters are typically first to arrive at emergencies, do the triage and stabilize patients.
But according to AMR, Murrieta fire meets its goal of reaching emergencies in 5.5 minutes less than half of the time, with an average response time of 6 minutes, 51 seconds, while AMR’s average is 6 minutes, 48 seconds.
McEntee said AMR medics could be there even faster without the two- minute delay caused by the city’s dispatch system, which requires AMR personnel to get location information via telephone.
Murrieta Mayor Doug McAllister, Councilman Alan Long and fire Chief Matt Shobert are backing implementation of a fee to support paramedic services, one of a number of municipal functions impacted by lower tax revenue.
The proposal has been the subject of recent town hall meetings and, at the direction of the city council or by public initiative, could be among the measures placed on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.
